This Father’s Day weekend, give Dad what he actually desires: permission to go fishin’ on the thirty ninth annual Father’s Day Dolphin Derby, set for Saturday, June 14. The favored Marathon match brings collectively households, mates and fishing fanatics for a laid-back celebration of dads and dolphinfish, with large prize payouts for anglers. 

Hosted by captain Jack Carlson of Two Conchs Sportfishing Charters, the occasion kicks off with ultimate registration and a drop-in captain’s assembly on Friday, June 13 from 9 a.m. to six p.m. at Two Conchs, 11499 Abroad Freeway in Marathon. Strains go in at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 14, and it’s sport on for dolphin in waters from Key West to North Key Largo till 3:30 p.m. 

These acrobatic, fast-growing pelagic fish, also called mahi-mahi or dorado, are exhibiting up in higher numbers and larger sizes, lighting up the deep blue with their signature electrical greens and yellows. And with the Gulf Stream hugging the reef and bringing nutrient-rich waters, the massive fish are inside hanging distance, with stories of some bulls tipping the scales at 30 or extra kilos. From seasoned offshore captains to weekend warriors, the phrase is identical: “Dolphin are operating robust and the chunk is scorching.” 

Contributors weigh their catch from 4 to five:30 p.m. at Two Conchs Bait, Sort out & Marina, 11587 Abroad Freeway, adopted by an awards banquet at 6 p.m. at Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters, 11710 Abroad Freeway, with money prizes for the highest 4 adults and rod and reel combos for junior anglers. Anglers can register at fathersdaydolphintournament.com.
